NFL Draft Party

April 12, 2011 by
Filed under Buffalo Bills, Club News

The NFL draft is right around the corner and we will be hosting our 2nd annual draft party at the Hudson Grill Midtown the evening of Thursday, April 28th at 7:30.

The Bills have the distinct honor of picking third this year, so let’s hope that ol Buddy and Chan choose wisely.  The last time the Bills picked this high, we fumbled by taking Mike Williams with the fourth pick in 2002.  We are however, eternally optimistic.

We will be having pizza from Buffalo at this event and a “guess the bills pick” contest, so get their before the start of the draft to participate.  Who will it be?  Marcel Dareus?  Von Miller?  Cam Newton?  Come to the Hudson Grill Midtown to find out!

Penney’s 2 Cents -The over-opinionated football voice of The Bills Backers of Atlanta

It’s here!  The Preseason has come to an end and it’s finally time to face the music Bills fans.  As we do every year at this point in the season we take an inventory of the “haves” and the “have-nots” in the league, division, and conferences and typically Bills fans are left empty handed, unless there’s a cold Labatt Blue around.

Preseason Wrap-up

The Bills (2-2) showed a great deal of promise at times this preseason against two very talented teams in the Indy and Cincy games.  But when you consider how they did against the lesser talented Lions and Redskins, the final scores make you wonder if The Bills will undoubtedly be the same team, different year.  Overall the starters on offense performed very well but the defense looked confused and underwhelming at times.  The defense did get better in many ways each game and you could visibly see that they were learning the more complicated nuances of the 3-4.  The secondary seemed to be ball hawks at times while at other times more burnt than my fried chicken wings after I’ve had a 12 pack of High Life.  Even the defensive line began to really shine by making big plays and bringing base pressure on the inside and outside.   To be fair, the unit was mostly calling base defenses and working in a few simple blitz packages along with a lot of nickel and dime packages to defend the pass heavy teams like Indianapolis.  Overall defensively, I am pleased that we didn’t open up the final chapters of the playbook for Belicheat to video and gameplan against so do I think this preseason’s results on defense are very tough to evaluate.  The real telling drop off was in special teams.  Losing Bobby April may be the worst thing to happen to our football team in the offseason.  A superb punter can only do so much and if you were to point out an area of most concern this would be mine based on preseason play so far.   We were competitive in all the games aside from the Redskin’s game.  But they were playing their 2nd game and it was just our first of the preseason.

Regular Season Preview

If you are an optimist you say something like “they’re still undefeated in the regular season” or “2  and 2 in the preseason is not all that bad”.  But you’d have to be deaf, blind and dumb not to hear the overwhelming predictions of all of the non-BILLIEVERS on TV, radio, print and the Internet.  I’ve always been an optimist and there’s no reason that I am going to stop now.  I have seen much more bleak situations than the one we are walking into now.  To help you also feel some level hope, I chose to resort to quotes from experts that might have some application to our 2010-2011 Buffalo Bills football season.

“A good coach will make his players see what they can be
rather than what they are.” — Ara Parasheghian

It’s the attitude of the players, not their skills, that is the biggest factor in determining whether you win or lose. – Harry Sinden

When you look on paper we may not have the same level of talent as the other three divisional teams, we have a very tough schedule and we haven’t been able to get out of our own way organizationally for almost 2 decades, etc.  But this year something feels different.  Maybe it’s the excitement of a “Thurmanesque” playmaker in C.J. Spiller or the hard ass attitude of Coach Chan Gailey or the new 3-4 defense.  Whatever it is, for the first time in years I saw top to bottom change towards a winning direction from One Bills Drive throughout the entire offseason.  I find it hard to believe that systematic change in a positive direction could yield worse results on the field.  Could we end up with 2 to 4 wins all season?  Sure!  But could we also win the division, and go far into the playoffs?  YES!

Bills fans, this is the time (maybe our only time this season) to be optimistic…

On offense, Trent Edwards has only one coach to report to and that historically helps to develop any solid coach/QB relationship.  The offensive line has improved tremendously and we may have added by subtraction with the departure of T.O.  The RBs are arguably the best and deepest stable of horses in the league.  But it all comes down to execution and if on third and long, Trent Edwards can hit the covered WR beyond the first down marker instead of his famous check down.   Edwards is and has been our biggest question mark of this coming season.  Which Trent will show up?  Chan has a knack of focusing on a strong running game so I see us utilizing the run to set up the pass and in this formula a short passing game can be very effective.  I feel really good about the offense putting up a decent amount of points this year.  Historically that is what has killed this team over the past several years.

‘Defense wins championships’ is the old adage.  That statement may ring more true this year than ever in the age of the new passing rules and QB coddling rule changes.  I don’t think anyone knows what we really have except the players and the coaches.  We don’t appear to out-talent the division but with the right mentality defenses can overcome almost any well groomed offense.  I don’t see our defense holding teams to under 14 points very often.  But I do see big play opportunity coming from an aggressive 3-4 defense.  Big interceptions by the Defense will win the Bills 4 or more games this season as the secondary will finally be recognized as a top unit in the league.   Overall though we will struggle to hold defenses to low point totals and you can expect many blown coverages along with big gashing running plays until the team learns how to adjust on the fly the way NFL coaches concentrate so intently on.

Special Teams is a tossup and can go either way.  Coverage teams have to improve drastically in order to keep the game in balance.

Prediction

Bills 9-7 and just missing the playoffs.  But hungry for a 2012 Superbowl pursuit.

I look forward to any comments, agreements or disagreements you may have and hope to see you at Hudson Grille Midtown vs. Miami on September 12th at 1 pm.
